I did my own "redneck" ballistic test with a 5 gallon bucket of water covered with some old jeans and a layer of plastic (to keep me from getting splashed too bad) and I fired one round into the mouth of the bucket 5 foot from muzzle to water and my bullet looked just like the one in the pic and didn't penetrate into the bottom of the bucket. So I'm pretty sure from that and all the test that the FBI has done with this round that it shouldn't take more than one or two well placed shots to stop the threat.

Ya I was going to buy ZMAX for the novelty and the fact that it was still critical defense, but I want the HST hands down. That is pure carnage.

I have LONG been a fan of the HST!!! Got my start in it when I used the 45GAP.

Depends on point of view. Hornady Critical Defense is known to feed more reliably than HST. Not to mention, you want expansion and penetration. A bullet that expands more penetrates less.
Personally, I'll take the more reliably feeding HCD over HST.

The fired rounds in the photo look almost like the Black Talon ammo that is out of production as far as I know! I loved the Black Talon a it is absolutley devastating. I am ging tofind some of the Federal HST for my 9mmP and .40 &W.

My dept. went to the 40 and HST after (3) 9mm shootings with another company's ammo. It took shotgun rounds to drop these guys, since then, one shot--one stop. BTW, I have some 180g black talon to test with my duty ammo--now to ask the rangemaster.

Federal HST .45acp +P worked well for my Dept. in our P220's.
I like Speer Golddots too. It works in all calibers, it's bonded, and it's easy to get. GD 124gr+P 9mm works very well for NYPD.

After reading this thread, I found some at Sportsmans Guide and ordered 300 rds. Unfortuantly, the shipping won't be until late September but thats OK with me. I have plenty of the Critical Defense ammo, but the Federal HST in .40 S&W looks far better for carry!! Still reminds me of the BLack Talon ammo!!!!
Thanks for posting this information and the photo!!!

Thanks for posting this information and the photo!!! I have both, HST180g and Black Talon180g. One of these days I will break down and do a comparison. Hey, MVRK if you are in the OC maybe you can help me test this stuff!
