I have the intention of picking up a pump shotgun in the near future for hunting, and back up home defense. It will be mainly for hunting small game animals for food. I am leaning towards a 20ga so that everyone in the household will be able to withstand the recoil. I have boiled it down to two choices. Remington or Mossberg. Which of these two brands do you have an opinion on. There is a Mossberg 500 (unknown age) at my local pawn shop for $179. It is an earlier build because the stock and pump is real wood, I have been told that now days most are made with synthetics. It appears to be in good condition but I wouldn't be able to test it until I purchased it and if it was broken then I would be stuck with it. If I could talk them down to $150 would it be worth the gamble or should I just spend a hundred or two more and get one new. Please chime in if you have an honest opinion.

Academy has an 870 with a 26" barrel and laminate wood furniture for $319. Looks interesting but only if the furniture was natural wood it would please me more but it looks to be a good deal on a new one. Do you have an 870 or know anyone who does? Is the receiver made of heavy steel or lightweight metal. I know some shotguns out there are made with the lightweight metal. Comes with a 2 year warranty. They also have a Mossberg 500 youth bantam for $240 that comes with a 10 year warranty. Only thing it has a shorter stock designed for smaller adults or youngsters. I could always find a used stock on Ebay that someone took off to put a pistol grip on. Damn, decisions, decisions. Anyway I still have time to decide, I told the wife I would wait until I got another paycheck with 18 hours OT on it before I would buy one, and just my luck, we ain't working this Saturday. Maybe she will let me get by with 10 hours OT.( This Friday's check)

My brother and I have the 870 in 12 gauge, his has been to hell and back and has not faltered once. He's had it for nearly 15 years too.

I will jump inn on this one too. I am not a shotgun guy, but I do have a couple, so here is my opinion.
First, you cant beat the 870, a top pump and have owned one for many years. But, I was at my LGS and they had a sale on the Mossberg Maverick with polymer furniture and the standard Mossberg action. Actually, it is the same parts made by Mossberg, but these parts are made in Mexico and assembled in the US. The shotgun is great and slick as it can be. I am well pleased with the Maverick and added a steel vented handguard and a low cost holgraphic rear sight. Cost of the Maverick was $175 (close).
Finally, the 870 is excellent, but if cost is a factor, I think you would be well pleased with the Mossberg. The military is using Mossberg shotguns in the "sand box". I think it will be a personal opinion and you will be happy with either one.

After some deliberation and the fear that the used mossy could possibly be defective with no way to return it, I have decided to forego the traditional look of a wood stock and go with the Mossberg Maverick 88 for the same price new in box. Wife can't justify spending more for something to shoot small game with. I say JUST-IF-I want it, I want it, but got to keep Momma happy and I settled with this. www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_130355_-1?N=39632025So thanks for the tip on the Maverick, Abwehr. Plan on picking one up Saturday if my Local Academy has one in stock.

Got back from Academy Sports about an hour ago and $205 later I picked up the Maverick 88 and 2 boxes of cheap federal dove/target loads. My son and I let a few go in the back yard and both him and I agree that she shoots great. Recoil is not harsh, possibly due to the fact that there is some heft to the maverick. Doesn't feel like a $179 shotgun. I will post pics later after I clean her back up. Overall I am pleased with my purchase. Here is a stock photo of one for now.

kennyd,
I think you made a good decision on the Maverick...I really like mine. Mine is the "riot" type short barrel and she shoots great! I keep military 00 buckshot in it most of the time, but I also have some shells that are actually "buck and ball" loads. One big buck and 6 balls. At a close range, this would be devastating.
