Ughh. I was browsing the ctd catalog and started looking at Black Rain AR uppers and I really want to build one now. So bad ass. I just can't decide if I want to build one or just buy a Sig M400.

To build or buy is a tough question. It depends on what you use to build verses buying a complete rifle. Some people can build the rifle they want for about $300 to $400 less than buying the Sig M400. You can go to the extreme and end up spending $500 more than the cost of an M400 but you get a customized rifle to your taste. One thing that buying a M400 is you get the Sig Warranty, with a build you get the MVRK warranty. ;D

Looking at a palmetto kit with magpull trigger guard and sights for 708.99, might go this route

That would be cool if it comes with everything you need. Leaves a lot of room for customizations. If you do go the build route, you should do a step by step documentation thread so others can see and learn the steps and tricks you use to complete the build. Do you have access to the tools needed to build one, I have read on AR15.com that some of the specialized tools that some people use to build rifles can cost quite a bit. Then some folks just use regular everyday tools. I'm no expert here, just relaying what I have read on that site. If you are not a member you should sign up, there is a lot of info on building ARs on that website. Anyway, good luck on your build if you choose that route, and don't forget pics.

most definitely will document it. From what I've read the Palmetto kits are relatively easy to put together. I probably won't be able to get it for awhile, the wedding is coming up soon and there would be a pissed of bride-to-be if her future husband was buying guns instead of groomsman gifts...

I have built all three of my AR Rifles; an M4 Carbine, an M16-A2 style, and a M16-A2 style in .22LR. If you buy the completed upper, it rakes about 1-2 hours for the assembly. This time includes any deburring, cleaning and lubing the parts.
The only difficult part is the installation of the detent and spring for the front upper/lower hinge pin. There is a little tool that sells for about $5 that will save a bunch of time and possibly the lose of the little detent pin that will launch into "never never land". I lost two the first time and then I got the little tool which solved all he problems.
I also made mine for about $600 each not including any major "bells & whistles". I feel I saved about $200+ on each one by doing the assemby myself, and finding deals on the internet for the uppers!

I've decided that I'm not going to build, I can buy an M&P for close to the same price and it will be ready out of the box.

I went to my local gun show Satruday afternoon and the best price I saw on a AR was a M&P for $750. most of the firearms and ammo were selling at "Obama" price range.....very high!

The better half says I can get one after she gets a house. So I'm going to have to get on the ball.

A couple of things you may want to look for in your AR. They are not a necessity but are a good thing to make your rifle last a lifetime. Chrome lined barrel and chamber, and chrome lined bolt carrier. I was told that the S&W M&P 15 sport model does not have these features and while they don't effect accuracy they do effect longevity. Just something to think about when researching. I was going to get the M&P sport and the salesman was showing me the difference $150 made when I purchased my Windham Weaponry MPC for $850 out the door. AR's are a blast to shoot so which ever you choose you will enjoy it as much as your 2022.
Oh BTW I got some spare 16p nails and a couple of 2 x4's to spare to get started on your new house.

the S&W M&P doesn't have a forward bolt assist, that is a necessity IMHO, even the Del Tons have that.
